This is one of my favourite things to eat, idombolo is not only tasty, its also very easy to make. All you need is 5 ingredients.
What you’ll need:
7 cups flour
1 cup sugar
pinch of salt
1 sachet yeast
jug of warm water
Add yeast to your warm water in a jug. Leave for a few minutes, allow it to foam.
In a large bowl, add flour, sugar, salt. Pour in yeast mixture slowly.
Combine the ingredients with your hands (clean hands).
If its dry, keep pouring the warm water and mix until you’ve got a soft dough but not runny.
Now knead the dough until elastic and smooth.
Coat your cling-wrap with a tablespoon of oil.
Cover the bowl with oiled cling-wrap, find a warm spot in the house to place your bowl. Now cover entire bowl with thick dishcloths.
Let it rest until it doubles in size. I usually leave it for 5 hours, my aunt leaves hers overnight.
Punch your dough in the center.
Place dough in greased enamel bowl, fill a pot with water and steam with a lid on for 1 hour.
Use a toothpick to check if idombolo is cooked. If the toothpick comes out clean, then your dombolo is ready.
